Laptops Banned on Direct Flights from Ten Muslim-Majority Countries to the States and UK

The United States and UK banned in-cabin presence of "laptop computers, iPads and other devices larger than a cellphone aboard direct inbound flights" from ten muslim-majority countries over fears of ISIS targeting these planes with hidden explosives. Intelligence suggests the development of these targeted weapons, as ISIS looks to step up its efforts to try to "compete with groups like Al-Qaeda's affiliate in Yemen."

Some view this measure as draconian, and a way to limit the influence of certain airliners like Etihad and Emirates from competing with American competition, specifically because this ban does not affect any American airliner. Others think the threat is serious and credible, as the UK implemented the ban as well, even though it does affect some of their domestic airlines, though they aren't enforcing it on all the countries the US is..

Either way, this is a bummer for Etihad and Emirates fans, of which there are many. Direct flights home to the States are greatly preferred by me, especially on fantastic airlines, but I generally like to work on flights, too. So, this has presented quite the conundrum.
