The Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-Ji)

The Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-Ji), officially named Rokuon-ji (Deer Garden Temple), is one of the most beautiful and peaceful sites in Japan. Formerly the retirement villa of the late 14th century shogun, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, upon his death his will decreed it would become a Zen temple of the Rinazi sect of Buddhism.

Overlooking a large reflective pond, the Golden Pavilion should be on any visitors' list when in Kyoto.
