St. John's is the capital city of Newfoundland and one of the oldest European settlements in North America. At roughy 500 years old, it doesn't compare to the old Viking settlements in Newfoundland, the city still outpaces just about every other European settlement on the continent.
While in St. John's you'll want to visit Signal Hill to take in the site of the harbor from above, as well as book a boat tour through Witless Bay to take in the sites from the water. Also, the easternmost point of Canada is at nearby Cape Spear Lighthouse. Don't travel all the way to St. John's to miss out on it.
