Drepung Monastery

Founded in the early 15th century, Drepung Monastery is one of the foremost schools of Gelug Buddhism.

The school was closed by the Chinese government in 2008, after protests by monks turned violent. Five years later the school was reopened.

The monastery was the chief residence of the Dalai Lamas until the completion of Potala Palace by the 5th Dalai Lama.
