The Jiayuguan Fort was built strategically between a mountain pass at the western edge of the Han dynasty's stronghold lands. The Great Wall ends here, and the main gates allowed China to regulate traders and travelers entering and exiting their lands.

This was the first site travelers of the Silk Road would see upon crossing the desert lands to the west. The wealth and ideas these traders brought with them made Jiayuguan rich and an important cultural center in Ancient China.
