Entering the public consciousness as an "Eden of the East," after the publication of James Hilton's Lost Horizon in the 1939, Shangri-La has been calling western tourists to its peaceful landscape ever since.

Shangri-La is at the edge of Yunnan Province, near Tibet. It's the latter with which the city is more closely associated.

The largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the region is the centerpiece of Shangri-La. Songzanlin Monastery is located on a mountain slope on the edge of town. The monastery was built by the 5th Dali Lama and has become the most important and influential Tibetan monastery in Yunnan.
