Summer Palace

Built in the 18th century as a retreat for the royal family to rest and entertain, the Summer Palace offers an escape from the bustle of Beijing with a large lake, cool breezes, and hilltop views.

If you really want to escape, take a walk around the lake to avoid the crowds viewing the palaces. The grounds of the summer palace are truly an excellent experience, and should be on every tourist's list right behind the Great Wall and Forbidden City.
