The Meiji Shrine sits on a spacious, forested ground near the Harajuku district of Tokyo. The shrine is dedicated to the first emperor of modern Tokyo and his consort.
Emperor Meiji oversaw the end of feudal Japan and the restoration of the emperorship. The Meiji Restoration focused on modernizing Japan to compete with the West. Upon the Emperor Meiji's death in 1912, Japan had alerted the global powers to its presence and rivaled many of them in economic and military ability.
